November 14, 2016 – All is swell in Creswell

Hey!!
I am in Creswell! I love it. It is a cute little town! Oregon is so
beautiful this time of year! And I absolutely love Sister Van Leuven!
She’s amazing! We have so much fun together! And there is tons of
amazing work to do here in Creswell.

We are teaching two totally solid people. One of them is Adam. He’s
50. He has been meeting with missionaries since the spring. He is
dating an LDS woman and he went to her home for Thanksgiving, and was
astonished by the atmosphere. No drinking, no fighting, just love and
good company. Haha. Well he came to church and he told the bishop that
he wanted to be baptized! And he has come a long way. He is getting
baptized this Sunday!! Wahoo!!! So exciting!

And George!!! He’s so awesome!!! He is on date for baptism as well. He
is so cool. He is struggling with coffee and smoking, but he is
progressing and has so much faith! He is trying to have the worlds
biggest gum sculpture, so he is always chewing gum. I’ll attach a pic.
He doesn’t exactly know how big it needs to be but he’s just working
on it.

So we live with nonmembers. On one half of their house. It’s a cute old place!

So I read and loved this scripture:
2 Nephi 33:1 And now I, Nephi, cannot write all the things which were
taught among my people; neither am I mighty in writing, like unto
speaking; for when a man speaketh by the power of the Holy Ghost the
power of the Holy Ghost carrieth it unto the hearts of the children of
men.

And I pondered this and found some awesome words from Elder David A. Bednar!

“Nephi teaches us, ‘when a man speaketh by the power of the Holy Ghost
the power of the Holy Ghost carrieth [the message] unto the hearts of
the children of men’. Please notice how the power of the Spirit
carries the message UNTO but not necessarily INTO the heart. A teacher
can explain, demonstrate, persuade, and testify, and do so with great
spiritual power and effectiveness. Ultimately, however, the content of
a message and the witness of the Holy Ghost penetrate into the heart
only if a receiver allows them to enter”.

I love this!! We need to allow our hearts to accept the teachings of
the Holy Ghost.
I love you all. Have a great week!!
Love,
Sister Dobbins

Attached are pics of sister Van Leuven and I, and I hit my 9-month
mark so we took a pic (barf I’m half way), us and our house, and
George and his gross/cool/idk gum sculpture

November 7, 2016 – Coquille to Creswell

Today I am transferring to Creswell! I can’t believe it, because I
just got here!!!! But I am looking forward to it! It will be amazing,
I know it. I will definitely miss many people here, and especially
Sister Persson. LOVE HER!

This past week we had a meeting in Eugene with half of our mission. It
was awesome. President gave us a sneak peak of the Christmas
Initiative! It is an amazing video. You will love it when it comes
out. It made me tear up. It is so sweet. Speaking of tearing up….
President Russell talked about becoming a self-master. And he showed
us a clip from Mulan!!! It was like Christmas! It was so wonderful
getting to watch part of a movie. Lol. But it truly was amazing. He
showed us the part where they sing, “Be a Man”. AND IT WAS SO
INSPIRING. While watching that clip and reminding yourself, that you
are a child of God, you are capable of doing hard things, and with the
help of your Savior you can do anything, the spirit will testify to
you that Mulan is a boss. It was truly an amazing experience. I
absolutely loved and will never forget it. Go watch that!! And never
forget it.

This week was awesome. We met Angie a few weeks back while doing
service, and we actually ended up tracting into her! Perks of being in
the smallest town ever. And she invited us back!! But not to have a
solid lesson, but to just show her a quick video about Jesus Christ.
Well we go back and she says, “oh Sisters did you get my message?” We
didn’t. But she invites us in and we give her a message, and we end up
talking and answering her super solid questions for an hour and a
half! We leave and we listen to her voicemail and it said, “I’m not
feeling up for company tonight so please don’t come over.” Wow. It is
such a blessing that we didn’t listen to her message. Lesson learned,
throw away your phone. Angie is amazing. She has so much potential. I
am so sad that I’m leaving her! I’ll miss her. She’s awesome.

I love you all! I hope you have a wonderful week!!!!!
Love,
Sister Dobbins

October 31, 2016 – Rain fo’ days

Happy Halloween!!!!!!! 🎃
This week was fantastic! We got caught in the rain ☔️ many many times
and I found out that my boots are not waterproof. So that’s awesome.
On the plus side at least my feet won’t be hot!!

On Friday we had the privilege of meeting an extraordinary woman. She
is going through an extremely rough time that I cannot comprehend. Her
husband was ill and he gave up and committed suicide. She was even
home when he did it. She feels so guilty and it was sad hearing what
she’s going through. We shared our favorite message with her. The
‘Because of Him’ video. It is because of our savior Jesus Christ that
we can overcome such horrible trials such as these. We can lean on the
Savior when we feel like we cannot stand. It is because of Jesus
Christ that our guilt can become peace and our sorrows can become joy.
Our Savior suffered for us, and He lives!

John and Casey, back in Springfield, got baptized!! I love them
soooooo much!!!! And in a year, they can be sealed in the temple! Love
it. They are so wonderful. I got to skype them before they got
baptized! I miss them so much!! It was great talking to them for a
bit. I sure love those guys!!!

President Russell had us study a talk in preparation for a special
meeting this Wednesday. It was phenomenal talk! It is The Power of
Self-Mastery by President James E. Faust. He talks about having
willpower to become who we know we can become. We only battle
ourselves. It’s only us stopping us from becoming the greatest person
that we can be.
“Self-mastery is a challenge for every individual. Only we can control
our appetites and passions. Self-mastery cannot be bought by money or
fame. It is the ultimate test of our character. It requires climbing
out of the deep valleys of our lives and scaling our own Mount
Everests.” Love it! Go read that talk!! It is from the April 2000
General Conference.

We also got to watch the Studio C Face to Face!! Love those guys. It
is so funny and awesome, yet so spiritual and inspiring. It was a real
tear jerker. Y’all should watch it for family home evening tonight if
you haven’t seen it!!!! I loved it! Studio C is a clean comedy group
and they’re amazing and I love them. The Face to Face is a live
interview. It’s in the Gospel Library. You’ll love it! 😀

I love you all!!! Hope you all have a happy Halloween!! Be safe!!!!

Love,
Sister Dobbins

October 24, 2016 – He is Risen

Hello!
We got to go to the Medford temple on Wednesday. It was marvelous. I
love that place so much! It is so amazing that we are able to feel so
close to our Heavenly Father while in the temple. I wish I could go
more often. I am so grateful for temples on this earth, that we are
able to be sealed with our families for eternity. Marriage doesn’t end
at death. It isn’t ’til death do you part.’ We are sealed together for
time and for all eternity. We will be together in this life and in the
next. I am so grateful for that knowledge. My family means the world
to me. And that is why I am on a mission. I leave my family for 18
months, so others can be with theirs for eternity.

We went on exchanges this week! I was in North Bend with Sister Santa
Maria, and we were on bikes! It was a fun change!! I miss mountain
biking!! So it was awesome getting back on a bike again. We used the
zone leaders bikes and helmets. Haha. They had law of chastity
pamphlets in their helmets to help with helmet hair, and also so the
law of chastity is always on their mind. Lol.

I’ve been studying the words of our beloved prophet Thomas S. Monson.
We are so blessed to have a prophet on the earth today. Here is a
story from his talk in the April 2010 General Conference:
“I will mention just part of one such account. Two weeks ago I
received a touching letter from a father of seven who wrote about his
family and, in particular, his son Jason, who had become ill when 11
years of age. Over the next few years, Jason’s illness recurred
several times. This father told of Jason’s positive attitude and sunny
disposition, despite his health challenges. Jason received the Aaronic
Priesthood at age 12 and “always willingly magnified his
responsibilities with excellence, whether he felt well or not.” He
received his Eagle Scout Award when he was 14 years old.
Last summer, not long after Jason’s 15th birthday, he was once
again admitted to the hospital. On one of his visits to see Jason, his
father found him with his eyes closed. Not knowing whether Jason was
asleep or awake, he began talking softly to him. “Jason,” he said, “I
know you have been through a lot in your short life and that your
current condition is difficult. Even though you have a giant battle
ahead, I don’t ever want you to lose your faith in Jesus Christ.” He
said he was startled as Jason immediately opened his eyes and said,
“Never!” in a clear, resolute voice. Jason then closed his eyes and
said no more.
His father wrote: “In this simple declaration, Jason expressed
one of the most powerful, pure testimonies of Jesus Christ that I have
ever heard. … As his declaration of ‘Never!’ became imprinted on my
soul that day, my heart filled with joy that my Heavenly Father had
blessed me to be the father of such a tremendous and noble boy. … [It]
was the last time I heard him declare his testimony of Christ.”
Although his family was expecting this to be just another routine
hospitalization, Jason passed away less than two weeks later. An older
brother and sister were serving missions at the time. Another brother,
Kyle, had just received his mission call. In fact, the call had come
earlier than expected, and on August 5, just a week before Jason’s
passing, the family gathered in his hospital room so that Kyle’s
mission call could be opened there and shared with the entire family.
In his letter to me, this father included a photograph of Jason in
his hospital bed, with his big brother Kyle standing beside the bed,
holding his mission call. This caption was written beneath the
photograph: “Called to serve their missions together–on both sides of
the veil.””

It is such a sweet story. I know that it is because of the Savior that
Jason will live again. His family found comfort in a time of grief
because of this gospel. Our savior Jesus Christ provided a way for
each of us to return to our Heavenly Father. We are able to overcome
physical death. We will live again! And we are able to be with our
families for eternity! I love this gospel so much and I’m so grateful
to be sharing it on my mission!

I love you all, I hope you have a wonderful week!!

October 19, 2016 – Do not believe Satan’s lies

This week was intense! Thursday night we were out contacting people in
an outlying area of our Ward, and people were like… “oh my gosh go
home! The storm! Oh my goodness!” And we’re like. Rain doesn’t stop
us. We kept working and we were fine but people kept actin’ crazy. But
then we get home and President and Sister Russell have a conference
call telling us to stay in for the weekend and they read the news to
us about this tsunami. Remember last week when I complained that our
area is the only area in the zone that isn’t on the coast? Yeah this
week I’m glad we’re not on the coast!! HAHA! It was pretty bad. But
I’ve seen worse storms in AZ so no worries!

I’m emailing today because today is our pday, because we’re going to
the temple!! I loooove the temple. I love the Medford temple. It is
such a beautiful and amazing place to be. I miss the temple so much.

This week is Book of Mormon week! We are trying to see who can pass
out the most Book of Mormons this week in our zone. Yesterday was
AWESOME!! We were walking down the street and this woman was sitting
on her porch and we decided to talk to her. She was super friendly and
we had a great time getting to know her and we had an awesome gospel
discussion. When we introduced the Book of Mormon, we told her that
Jesus Christ appeared to the people on the American continent. She
then said, “Oh of course. Jesus Christ loves all of God’s children. He
wouldn’t just visit people in the Middle East.” And we’re like, “Oh my
goodness you have to read this book!” And we taught her some more and
committed her to read 3 Nephi 11. And we told her we’d come back.
Later in the day, the elders texted us and said, “Did you give a Book
of Mormon to a lady named Sandy?” “Yes why?” “Because that’s Brother
Gill’s (our Ward mission leader’s) sister and he’s been trying to give
her a Book of Mormon for 35 years.” And we’re like OH MY GOSH THAT’S
SO MIRACULOUS!!

Church on Sunday was flippin’ sweet. In sacrament meeting the speakers
spoke on the Atonement and repentance. It inspired me to continue to
study the subjects in my personal study. This is from President Boyd
K. Packer’s talk in the October 2012 general conference:

“Throughout your life there may be times when you have gone places you
never should have gone and done things you never should have done. If
you will turn away from sin, you will be able one day to know the
peace that comes from following the pathway of complete repentance.”

I know that to be true. We all make mistakes. And we can become free
from that pain and that guilt from our sins. All because of our
Savior, Jesus Christ. He provided a way for us to repent and become
cleansed from sin. He suffered and died for every single one of us. No
matter what sin we committed, whether it be big or small, our Savior
has already atoned for it. After we completely and correctly repent of
our sins, our Heavenly Father remembers them no more. Isaiah 1:18
though your sins be as scarlet, they shall be as white as snow. No
matter the stain that our sins leave, it can be completely removed
through repentance. After we are forgiven for our sins, we need to
forgive ourselves. I know that sometimes it is hard to believe that we
are worthy of happiness and peace. THOSE THOUGHTS ARE FROM SATAN! He
is trying to make you believe that you are not good enough to be
forgiven. He will be reminding you of your sins. DO NOT BELIEVE
SATAN’S LIES!

You are a child of God. He loves you and wants you to return to Him.
Jesus Christ provided a way for us to return to Him. I know that to be
true. I love my Savior and I love this gospel. I know that this gospel
blesses families and that we can be with our families after this life
and for eternity!

I love you all! And now I’m following up, I challenged you to set your
homepage as LDS.org who did it?! 🙂 if you didn’t, you can repent, and
still do it! 😇😉

Love,
Sister Dobbins

October 10, 2016 – With God all things are possible

Hey all!
It’s been a rough finding week. We aren’t teaching anyone and I’m
going through teaching withdrawals. But we will be teaching a little
girl named Justice 🙂 she’s a cutie. We have the same chap stick so I
guess you can say we’re bffs. I’ve taught a 9 year old in each of my
areas. I love the little ones! 🙂

This Ward is awesome. Everyone is so friendly and cute and sweet. Love it here!

We had ZTM this week. It was on fire! I loved it!! We learned a new
way of planning. 🙂 should be fun. It was awesome being with the whole
zone. Our zone is the biggest in the mission, and sister Persson’s and
my area is the only area in the zone not on the coast…… not fair.
Yesterday I told a member I’m from Mesa, AZ. And he said, “I’m sorry.”
And I’m like…. uhh you do realize that you live in Coquille, right?
This little place is somethin’ else. Still love it though I guess
haha.

We watched a movie for studies this morning at Sister Sackett’s house.
‘How Rare a Possession: The Book of Mormon’. It was phenomenal. I
loved it. It really portrays how blessed we are today to have access
to the Book of Mormon so easily. I love this gospel and appreciate
what hardships others had to endure to bless our lives today. My 18
month mission is nothing in comparison. I love my mission and am
grateful to be sharing these truths that have blessed my life so much.
I know that the Book of Mormon is of God.

Sister Persson drove into a ditch the other day. Our car got stuck. It
was cold outside, and we were in a hurry, so I just had faith. And
then our car 🚗 got itself out. It was sweet. With God it is
possible!! Matt 19:26. I have faith that we will find the prepared
people here! And we will teach
them!!

I love you all. Have a terrific week!!
Love,
Sister Dobbins

October 3, 2016 – Listened to the prophet. No big deal.

I love Coquille! It is such a cute little place. But get this. It
reminds me of Globe, AZ. But probably a lot smaller. The people here
are so great. The Ward is so wonderful. Everyone is so loving and so
nice!! This is my third time pink washing into an area though. Why
does President keep doing this to me? I’m tired of double transferring
into an elders area. It’s rough work. We have to deal with a gross
area book and a gross apartment. But I literally don’t know anything
different so it’s all good!!!

We watched general conference at Sister Sackett’s house!! Wasn’t
conference wonderful?!?! I loved it so much. Sister Sackett is a
recent convert of only a year. She is just the sweetest gal in the
world! Her home is quite literally our home away from home. I just
love her to death.

We’ve been working hard here in Coquille. The work is slow though! Not
what we’ve heard at all. So we came here with higher expectations
hahaha. It’s all good though. We’re destined to find people to
teach!!!! There are so many potentials here that we will hopefully be
working with! I love Sister Persson so much!! My comp. she’s the best!
We get along so well it’s amazing. We have so much fun!!

So we’re not too far from the coast, but we’re only allowed to drive
there sometimes for pdays. So today we’ll be bored in Coquille. The
rest of the zone is hiking and playing volleyball on the beach for
Sister Peterson’s birthday. It sucks being cast out in exile. Although
we do serve with 2 other elders in our Ward. Elders Johnson and Green.
Elder Green is a greenie haha. I served in Klamath Falls 1st Ward with
elder Johnson for 2 transfers so we’re familiar.

Every talk from General Conference was just phenomenal. I loved
everything so much. We are so blessed to have a living prophet on the
earth today. It is a manifestation of our Heavenly Father’s love for
His children. We are able to hear counsel from our leaders to help us
in this crazy world. We truly are in the last days. Satan is under
attack. There were many wonderful talks about missionary work! I can
truly testify that missionary work is so important. It is the Lord’s
work. We are the Lord’s hands and we need to bring God’s children unto
Him.
I really loved Elder Quentin L. Cook’s talk. He said that stumbling
blocks can be made into Stepping stones. I love that. Our trials are
blessings. They will always help us grow.

I love you all! I love my mission so much. I am so blessed to be here
in Coquille, Oregon. I know this is where the Lord needs me. I know
this is the Lord’s true gospel restored back onto the earth. And he is
at the head of it. I know that our Savior lives and He loves each of
us.

Love,
Sister Dobbins

September 19, 2016 – Yay rain

Hello everyone!
This week was pretty great!! John and Casey moved their baptism date
to October 29th. They’re still doin’ freakin’ awesome. Love those
guys. They have the cutest little toddler, Violet. Love that girl. She
turns two on October 16! She’s soooooo cute. I don’t have a picture of
her, maybe next time. Haha. But every time we meet with them it’s in
the evening when she’s in bed, so maybe not next time haha.

So Beth and Alley are doing well! Love those girls. We taught them
twice this past week. They aren’t as rowdy because we’re basically
pros now. We got this teaching children thing down. Well teaching Beth
and Alley thing down haha. Their lessons are super spiritual and it’s
just so amazing. They’re great. But they came to church with their dad
yesterday and left early 😫 made
me sad. Like before sacrament even happened.

Cool story though… We implemented this new thing, where when we
contact anyone, we go to their neighbors on the right side, left side,
and across the street. And it really keeps us busy!! And it’s awesome.
Love it. Well while doing this I had the impression to stick around
and knock all the doors in the entire apartment complex. Well it ended
up being a bad idea because there was some major persecution,
basically. But we didn’t get our hopes down! We had one door left!!!
And it was Michael! He was so prepared! He NEEDED us to knock on his
door. It was awesome. We shared the Book of Mormon with him and we
will teach him next week. Super cool. Love the promptings of the Holy
Ghost.

It’s been raining a bit 🙂 finally experiencing some Oregon weather.
It’s been real.

I would like to add some thoughts on faith.
Ether 12: 27
And if men come unto me I will show unto them their weakness. I give
unto men weakness that they may be humble; and my grace is sufficient
for all men that humble themselves before me; for if they humble
themselves before me, and have faith in me, then will I make weak
things become strong unto them.

Come unto Him and have faith in Him. I know that as we have faith in
the Lord and humble ourselves before Him, he WILL make our weaknesses
strengths. I know that. And I challenge each of you to humble
yourselves before the Lord. And another challenge: make your homepage
on your computer LDS.org 🙂 do it!!

Love you all

September 13, 2016 – In memory of Jordan Jeffs

It’s been a hard week but I am so blessed to be here in Springfield at
this time.

Our Ward mission leader’s son, passed away last Tuesday night. The
Jeffs family is the greatest family I’ve ever known! They are so
strong! I should’ve known that when we went over to their house that
they would be the ones cheering us up. They have so much faith. I
can’t imagine going through such a trial without the knowledge of the
gospel. Jordan was about to start his senior year of high school. He
was planning on serving a mission. The Lord took him sooner than we
all expected. And now he’s on his mission on the other side. He’s
helping people in the spirit world come to know the gospel of Jesus
Christ who didn’t have a chance to accept it on this earth. I’ve
learned a lot this past week. I’ve taught the plan of salvation more
times this week than in my whole mission combined. I’ve hugged and
cried more people than I ever have before.

John 14: 15, 21
15 If ye love me, keep my commandments.
21 He that hath my commandments, and keepeth them, he it is that
loveth me: and he that loveth me shall be loved of my Father, and I
will love him, and will manifest myself to him.

We have the commandments and the principles of this gospel to make us
happy. As we obey His commandments we will have joy. Our Heavenly
Father loves us. He knows that we aren’t perfect. He blesses us as we
strive to live His commandments.

I love you all. Have a great week!
Love,
Sister Dobbins

September 5, 2016 – Awkward & Awesome

So this week was great!

We had another great lesson with Aaron. He is having a bit of trouble though. He wants all this proof for everything. He needs faith. We’re going to have to share Alma 32 with him. I loove that chapter from the Book of Mormon!

We taught John and Casey and it was just so amazing! They are THE BEST. Apparently John studies the gospel for 4 HOURS every night!! I cannot believe it. I am literally teaching the most prepared people ever. They came to a baptism and they loved it. I am so excited for them 🙂

So the most awkward thing happened. We went to contact a potential investigator. She’s 12. And she answers the door and she’s excited to see us! We ask her if there’s a time we can meet with her. She runs inside to ask her dad. She comes back out and she tells us that she wants to meet at the park, and she gives us directions and everything. So we leave her with a prayer to make her a new investigator. And immediately after the prayer, she says, “Actually can we not meet?” And we were just like …..uhhhhh. And she says, “I don’t know why I said that because I actually don’t want to meet.” And then we got dropped. Right after she became an investigator. It was sooooo weird. But It was hilarious. But then we got thinking… She was excited, she even asked her dad for permission, she gave us specific directions to the park. We were thinking that maybe she got hit with a ton of opposition. And she freaked out and canceled. So sad. And awkward.

So Alley and Beth are doing great 🙂 They are crazy little rowdy gals. They are 11 and 9. Ugh church yesterday…. So they come to church without their mom because she works Sundays. Alley’s primary teacher picks them up and they sit with their family. And during fast and testimony meeting the girls walk out! And we were sitting on the back row so we could see them out the doors. They were sitting on the couch just visiting with each other. And we didn’t want to force them to come back in. But like 10 minutes later, we look out the open doors and they are laying upside down on the couches in the foyer!! Their dresses are falling down and they’re just hanging out cracking up at how much fun they’re having. It was mortifying. So then we went out there to babysit them.
We met with them yesterday afternoon for a lesson. They were soooo rowdy. But I figured out the trick!! Singing a Children’s hymn works. It helps them calm down. Yesterday it was amazing. We started out with I am a Child of God. They loved it. And the spirit was so strong. It was so peaceful and calm in that house. And we taught a great lesson of the Plan of Salvation. 🙂

I love this work. I am seeing so many miracles in Springfield. I absolutely love it here. 🙂
I love you all. Have a great week!!
Love,
Sister Dobbins

The graffiti pics are taken in Eugene. That place is weird.
I love Oregon. So beautiful and green. 🙂
